Suggested itinerary for the first time traveler to Cape Town:

  • Friday evening fly to Cape Town 18:30 hrs R 1,000 - 2,800. NB: book well in advance to get cheaper air flights.

  • Saturday:
    • 08:30 Walk/climb up Table Mountain through Plattekloof Gorge or take the cable car to top of Table Mountain. The climb is easy for reasonably fit persons, but do not try it if you have a heart condition, take the cable car instead! You'll wish you had never done it, but as you walk you will get the most spectacular views of Cape Town that are not possible from any other vantage point. It is not a mountain climb, but a walk up a steep incline taking 35-60 minutes dependent upon fitness. Table Mountain boasts 3,800 species of plants many of them are found nowhere else on earth.
    • "09:30 Breakfast at Table Mountain Restaurant
    • 11:30 Seal Island by boat from Hout Bay fishing harbour
    • 13:00 Fish & chips at Hout Bay harbour
    • 14:00 Hout Bay Crafts Market
    • 16:00 Drinks at Waterfront

  • Sunday
    • Wine Route - visit historic wine farms of the Cape where you do breakfast, lunch and dinner tasting South Africa's finest wines. This is an all day event and often leads to intoxication. Be careful.
    • 18:30 - fly back to Johannesburg
    • 20:20 - arrive back in Johannesburg

  • Other Recommended activities in Cape Town:
    • Blues Restaurant Camps Bay Beach - a relaxing day doing nothing but look at beautiful beaches and beautiful bodies upon it. Definitely a must for Peeping Toms.
    • Cape Point, where the two oceans meet, has a good, but variable restaurant.
    • Hout Bay Hotel well-known for its excellent sea foods and wine.
    • Long Street for the Nightclub lovers. Party until you drop in a street filled with quaint and not so quaint clubs. It is a paradise for younger and younger at heart and you will grow weary!
    • Robben Island - an island fortress where Nelson Mandela and other revolutionaries were incarcerated during the Apartheid struggle.

  • SCUBA Diving - excellent wreck sites of historic vessels such as:
    • Good Hope -
    • Maori - A Merchant ship that …
    • Maritzburg - a vessel of historic significance. It led the D Day invasion of Normandy during WW2. Bought by the SA Navy during 1947 as a training vessel, was scuttled off Simon's Town for divers training & recreation recreation.
Note: Cape Town waters are very cold by comparison to Aliwal Shoal or Sodwana. They range from 8 -15 ?c dependent upon whether you are diving on the east or west coast of Cape Town. The East Coast has the warm Mozambique current that travels southward to the Antarctic & the west coast has the cold Benguela current that moves northwards. Gear is available from SCUBA Pro Sea Point. They offer good service and good dive masters. Regrettably Nitrox must be ordered at least two days in advance.
    • Simons Town - a naval base protecting the Cape shipping routes. Blue Marlin Restaurant is recommended.
    • Waterfront - a tourist trap offering all amenities and razzmatazz expected in such a location, but we say go where the locals go and get to know real Cape Town.
