Nestling
at the foot of Table Mountain and set in nine acres of lush
gardens, the Mount Nelson Hotel is one of Cape Town's most
elegant hotels offering unparalleled tradition, history and
luxury.
Our Heritage
The Mount Nelson Hotel, opened on the 6th of March 1899, was
the fruit of the imagination and determination of shipping
magnate Sir Donald Currie. The hotel was designed to emulate
the finest in London which was then the leading capital of
refined hostelry. The reviews which followed the grand opening
of the Mount Nelson claimed that the hotel surpassed all expectations
and exceeded the comparison with its British rivals.
The first visitors to the hotel were
wealthy travellers - the European high society who were still
enjoying the exploration fever which had taken hold earlier
in the century, the nouveau riche and those in search of fame
and fortune who recognised that up-and-coming Cape Town could
offer a wealth of opportunities. It was a time when legends
were born, nurtured and, occasionally, discredited on the
verandah of the hotel.
Since then, the pursuit of modern
comfort and convenience has led to the constant improvement
of every aspect of the hotel. Today the Mount Nelson embraces
the future with facilities such as modern communications services,
a Business Centre, a gym, a health and beauty salon, two swimming
pools and two tennis courts, both fine dining and a more relaxed
al fresco dining experience, whilst continuing to embrace
its heritage by maintaining traditions such as the famous
sumptuous afternoon teas, Garden Walks with the Head Gardener
and always offering friendly yet professional service.
