Johannesburg & Surrounding Areas

Kwa Manzi Guest Farm - Magaliesberg

It's an exclusive country farm beside the Magaliesberg River. Its indigenous river vegetation attracts abundant birdlife to keep the birder busy and the kids interested.

Rollout a blanket or two & unpack your picnic basket in a secluded spot! Then, lie back all afternoon gazing at a clear blue sky and let the bubbling waters of the brook put you to sleep.

You can entertain energetic kids with a walk through the farm to see the animals they keep penned on the weekends for city kids to touch & feel.

Kwa Manzi likes four-legged people, so you're well behaved friends are welcome. It's on the Route 24, 45 minutes from Johannesburg or Pretoria.

Golden Harvest - Northgate Johannesburg
Golden harvest is a park dedicated to owners that wish to walk their pets. It's divided into two parts. To the east is a well-tended garden area that hosts picnic places, a children's playground and grassy lawns dotted with shady trees to play ball. The west is a mix of natural grassland, small streams, tall Eucalyptus trees and good vistas. More than anything it's a rare place where all dogs are equal and masters are slaves to stick and balls thrown for them.
Golden Harvest, Northgate is 20 minutes from Johannesburg & open seven days a week.

Cradle of Mankind - Sterkfontein

A trip to the Cradle of Humankind is a must. That is, if you are interested in where Granny & Grandpa came from. It's a World Heritage Site at Sterkfontein, 40 km NW, from Sandton City & 35km west of Pretoria. Paleontologists have found nearly half the world's hominid fossils at Sterkfontein.

There's a tea garden nearby, on a farm growing herbs, chilies & honey. It rests on the banks of the Crocodile River in a charming country setting, supplying home baked goodies, honey, herbal teas & coffee for picnics & take home in abundance.

Picnic spots at the river are limited, so book in advance... The Farm supplies picnic baskets for those that want that convenience, from 9am to 4pm 7 days per week.

Fort West Village - Pretoria
Fort West, founded in 1880 to rehabilitate patients of Robben Island & built in 1893, is now a country village close to the capital city of Pretoria. It lies on a six kilometer swathe of wooded valley, in the foothills the Whitewaters Mountain.

A guided tour through this remarkable 19th century village will tell you of Africa in those days. The Heritage's hiking trails take you back to the 16th century Venda stone village ruins that say nothing, but remind one that there is unwritten history before Colonialism.
Van Vuuren farm provides picnic baskets and other goodies. It dates back to 1898. Fort West is about 15 minutes outside Pretoria on the N4 toll road.
