Durban City - Our recommendations

Ushaka Restaurant - Downtown Durban Waterfront
This is a world class five star restaurant. The décor is extreme and beautiful, the service is immaculate, food is brilliant haute cuisine, prices are lower than they might be, but not cheap. R 250 per person should do the trick. This is more than a meal, it is an experience that you must do once in your lifetime. It's good for romantic dinners, business lunches and any dinner occasion.

The Cargo Hold inThe Phantom Ship - Ushaka
In line with its location on the Phantom Ship, the restaurant earned itself the name Cargo Hold.

The splendour of yesteryear is restored with the use of maritime artefacts. Having run aground on the Natal coast line sharks have inhabited part of the ship. This is where the Cargo Hold Restaurant is located. Patrons can see the sharks in a tank that forms a backdrop to their dining experience.
The ship’s Cargo-hold is laden with flavours from all corners of the world, hence the chef tucks into this stock when preparing his food. The food preparation includes spicy, fruity and exotic remnants picked up from across the globe, combined with the freshest of Kwa–Zulu Natal’s local produce to give our passengers the culinary journey of a life time.

Restaurants - Umlhanga & Ballito

Umhlanga & Ballito have become the affluent suburbs of Durban between 14 & 24 km north of the city centre. Although there are good restaurants in Durban, if you want a combination of sea, sun, good food and a general holiday ambiance, you need to get out of the city.

Al Pescatore - Ballito - 1 km from the Boathouse Hotel
Very good food, but a little overpriced for the quality of the decor. I would not let that deter you. It is a stones throw (30 meters) from the breakers and Restaurant owner Trevor is great company. He is a real showman. Food & service are excellent. Budget R 230 per person for starter, main, dessert & a few glasses of wine.

Boathouse Hotel - Ballito
Good food, good service and good atmosphere. This is a well run establishment on the Balito's beachfront. It is part of the Boathouse Hotel. Few places in Southern Africa have such a location. It is on a quiet part of the beachfront. Not many tourists go that far down. If you want a chilled afternoon or dinner with the sound of waves breaking in the background, this is where you want to be. It lacks the Bustle of Mauro's
