Western Cape Town

Outdoor Activities

Beaches
Cape Town has stunning beaches separated by "The Mountain. When the wind blows hard on one side of the berg, you will more than likely find a calm spot on the other. The best bathing months in Cape Town are from mid-January to mid-April. It also has frequent out of season warm weather all year round. You can find yourself sunbathing in mid winter in a 26 degree heat wave lasting three to four days when it should be 15-20 degrees.
Clifton Beach, Camps Bay, Llandudno Beach, Sandy Bay, Sea Point are on the western side of the mountain, while Muizenberg, Simons Town, Boulders, Fishoek, Hout Bay & Noordhoek lie to the east.

Cape Flying School
Flight training is a personal business. One on one instruction is important. The Cape Flying school has a good reputation for safety and service. The writer has flown there on a few occasions and found the staff friendly, courteous and efficient. If one works at it an hour per day, one can get a PPL (Private Pilots License) within six weeks. It's internationally recognized and costs between ZAR 36-45,000.

Cango Caves
According to legend the caves were discovered during 1780. Early visitors had to brave the pitch darkness of the vast caverns from the poor light of self made candles.

Over the years improvements took place and today modern technology makes it possible that all the wonders of the cave are skillfully illuminated for the benefit of visitors.

The Cango Caves are an absolute must for all domestic and/or foreign tourists - if you miss the Caves, you might as well have stayed home.

Go Karting - Kenilworth
Indoor Kart Racing is a scream. It'll take you back to the years when you were a kid, racing your mates in soap box carts made of anything that would roll & hold together. It's an inexpensive, mega-excitement sport. The adrenaline rush of racing a high-tech kart at speed around a twisty racetrack, as you jostle for position can only remind one of what it was like being a kid. I'd thoroughly recommend this for families, teambuilding and birthday parties.

Golf - Milnerton Golf Club
Milnerton Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 seaside course situated in a leafy suburb just 10 minutes north of the city of Cape Town. Surrounded by natural beauty, the course is a pleasure to the senses and a challenge to even the most experienced golfer - especially when the prevailing South Easter, affectionately known as the "Cape Doctor" - makes her house calls in the summer months!
Nestled between the Atlantic ocean and the RietVlei river, this lush links-type course is relatively flat with few trees. But with the sea and the lagoon bordering most holes, and the 7 beautiful water holes waiting to claim the wayward shot, it offers a truly unique golfing experience! Typical of many links-type courses, you will play the first 9 holes out, enjoy a light meal at the halfway house, and then return back to the clubhouse via the second 9.

Horse Riding - Noordhoek
Noordhoek Beach is the longest beach in Cape Town measuring four kilometers. famous for its horse rides. There is nothing quite like galloping through the waves, the spray in your face and the wind in your hair. Horse rides along Noordhoek Beach are available from Imhoff's Farm just outside Kommetjie or from a number of stables in Noordhoek itself. Horse riding lessons for riders or all ages and levels are also available.

Microlight Tours - Western Cape Microlight Clubs
The Western Cape Microlight Club is an association of aviation enthusiasts who enjoy building, flying and discussing everything about microlight aircraft . Our membership is currently on 120 and the club boasts a wide selection of aircraft.

Quad biking - Downhill Adventures
Now we are talking great fun in the outdoors. No license is required because its all done off road and it s safer for novices than off road biking. Sea Kayaking - Downhill Adventures
I like doing a bit of exercise that justifies the calories consumed from imbibing the occasional beer. Kayaking does it for me as cycling does. It's easy for most and relaxing, while burning those calories with little effort. Down hill adventures offer guided sea kayaking trips along the coast of the Cape Peninsula. They are well organised and maintain a position as market leaders. They've been going since 1995.

Iziko Museums
Iziko Museum of Cape Town is a African museum telling the history of South Africa, through colonial times, the Apartheid Struggle to the New Struggle to build a future for the citizens of this country. It is often said that History is the beaten path to future success. Through history we can avoid the mistakes of the past and better plan our future. For this purpose, we think Iziko Museum's well worth seeing if history is your bag. 192 Main Road, Muizenberg (close to Muizenberg Station).

Boulders Penguin Colony
The Boulders Penguin Colony of Simons Town, Cape Town, is a growing colony of the African Penguin, once near extinction. Its population is growing steadily thanks to the efforts of the Endangered Wildlife Trust who have relentlessly imposed themselves upon persons bent on the decimation of this species. Wooden walkways allow visitors to view the penguins without disturbing them. The National Parks Board has an information centre giving you background & information of the penguin colony. Your kids will love it and so will you. It's worth taking a beach towel & a day off to laze at Boulders Beach. There is a cute restaurant there too, like a Granny Smith teashop. . The Restaurant managers name is Shawn. He's a great guy. Ask for him by name.

Robben Island
Nelson Mandela made Robben Island famous. He was detained there for twenty-seven years by the Apartheid Government. For ecological reasons Robben Island is now a World Heritage Site. Robben Island has stunning views across the bay of Cape Town to Table Mountain, the most majestic of all mountains. In the political context, Robben Island is a symbol of defiance against the Apartheid government. What concerns the writer is George Orwell's closing comments in his novel,"Animal Farm." History will tell us if George was right.

Robben Island is an unforgettable experience, where dungeons whisper a song of dark times past. There's a guided tour leaving every hour or so led by ex-political prisoners who give you a three and a half hour of diatribe (which becomes tedious after it's established that the Historian has a limited view of History). Ferries leave at regular intervals throughout the day from the Clock Tower Precinct at the V&A Waterfront. If you like the outdoors, have zest for recent history and want to photograph Table Mountain, this is an excellent choice.

Seal Island Tours - Romonza Boat Trips
A lazy and interesting way to spend a morning. Seals look cute and cuddly, but don't get into the water. It's cold and seals are the Great White's favourite prey. Allow forty minutes to drive to Hout Bay from the city bowl, an hour and a half on the water and finish off with lunch at one of the harbor restaurants.

Table Mountain & Cable Way
Table Mountain is a spectacular vantage point to view & photograph Cape Town, our Mother City. Various pedestrian routes exist to climb it. However, the most convenient is the cable car offering the less adventurous, an easy mechanical ascent to the top (3,824 ft ASL). Unless you walked the climb, there is not much to do except enjoy the most stupendous 360 degree view, a tacky restaurant and the usual diatribe from ill-informed guides. However, one cannot dismiss the exhilaration one feels being on top of the most beautiful of mountains in the world, Table Mountain. Because of its elevation above sea level, the weather can and will change without warning. Like a tempestuous wife she will challenge you. Take a windbreaker even if it is stifling hot at the base of the mountain at the commencement of your sojourn. Table Mountain is the most fickle of wives; she'll woo you, enchant you and make your time a misery if you allow her.

Wine Estates & Wine Tasting

Kanonkop Estate
Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. His son Paul Oliver became the Minister of Railways and Harbours and later became a Senator. Paul Oliver took over the reins from his father and drew in partners Danie Rossouw a known comedian & in 1968 former Springbok rugby great Jan 'Boland' Coetzee joined the team as a young graduate winemaker from the University of Stellenbosch. Since then they have made very funny, but forceful wines with a strong jockstrap& takkies influence. A highly recommended estate.

Spier Estate
An enchanting Cape experience awaits you at historic Spier is one of the closer estates in the heart of the Stellenbosch wine lands. Ten years ago, Spier iwas taken over by a Germand winemaker, Baron von Drinkalot who pumped in loads of money to build a hotel, conference facilities and day care center for alcoholics posing as wine tasters. They have done a great job. Undoubtedly the most unique wine land developments in RSA.

Wine Routes & Wine Tasting
The Cape Wine lands are a must do. Breathtaking vistas, majestic mountain backdrops, steeped in history, rolling through undulating vineyards, seated at the feet of mountains that await you is what this experience is about. Tarry not! This is the heart of Cape Dutch & Huguenot settler culture. Their wines regularly win international awards. Many of the wine lands are still owned by original settler families thrown out of Europe during the 1800's because they chose to defy the Catholic Church. The most popular of wine routes are Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Wellington and Paarl. Ignore the hosts enjoy the wine!
