Port Elizabeth

No 7 Castle Hill Museum
Regarded as one of the oldest surviving Settler cottages in Port Elizabeth. This picturesque family dwelling, which dates back to 1827, has been restored to reflect the history and elegant lifestyle which was enjoyed by any English middle-class family in mid-19th century Port Elizabeth.

.

Addo Elephant Park
Port Elizabeth is often just the starting or finishing point for the Garden Route, but has more to offer than just a bed for the night. It has interesting museums and historical town tours. Once you have made it all the way to Port Elizabeth, you might as well go that little bit further east and visit Addo Elephant National Park - an absolute must for elephant lovers!

Directions: ADDO ELEPHANT PARK.

Shamwari Game Park
Thanks largely to the efforts of visionary Adrian Gardiner, the Big 5 once again roam the Eastern Cape plains at Shamwari, only 50 minutes from the P.E. airport. Gardiner's 20,000-hectare (49,000-acre) reserve has garnered numerous international awards for conserving a vanishing way of life -- not only for reintroducing game, but also for the reserve's respectful focus on settler and African culture. After a buffet-style lunch, day-trippers are taken to Kaya Lendaba, an African art and culture village created by controversial sangoma (traditional healer) Credo Mutwa. The Kaya gives visitors the opportunity to understand much of Xhosa culture and ceremonies. This is followed by a visit to the Born Free centre, a sanctuary for abused animals, and a 3- to 4-hour game drive in which you explore the five ecosystems of the reserve in an open-topped Land Rover, driven by a knowledgeable ranger. Besides the Big 5, you will spot antelope (the reserve has 18 species), giraffe, wildebeest, hippos, and, if you're lucky, cheetah.

Apple Express
The Port Elizabeth Apple Express has since inception in 1903 contributed much to the national heritage, family memories and milestones of South Africa’s citizens. Not only is the Apple Express one of only two narrow gauge steam trains still operational in Southern Africa, but it also runs across the highest narrow gauge bridge in the world – the Van Stadens Bridge, approximately 77 metres (250 ft) – and currently boasts one of the longest working narrow gauge tracks. The Van Stadens Bridge was built in 1904 and to this day remains operational for train excursion purposes.

Come and enjoy a fun-filled family day whilst embraced by picturesque scenery enjoying your picnic. Experience the culture of the local inhabitants who trademark the region, and enjoy the hospitality and friendliness en route to your destination.
